Effect of the Dithiocarbamate Fungicide Mancozeb on Sugarcane Growth and Soil Biology in Yield Decline Affected Soils

چکیده
The dithiocarbamate fungicide mancozeb is used extensively around the world for control of foliar diseases. Initial yield decline research in the early 1990s investigated soil application of fungicides for the amelioration of poor root health in sugarcane. Experiments in both the glasshouse and field have since shown that root health and plant growth improve dramatically following mancozeb application to soil. Experiments have also shown there is a strong dose-response relationship between mancozeb and plant growth, that soil microbiological populations are related to fungicide dose, and there appears to be evidence linking a decrease in dematiaceous (dark sterile) fungal root colonisation with fungicide application and improved sugarcane growth. The evidence suggests soil fungi contribute to sugarcane yield decline.

Dematiaceous Fungi, a Cause of Poor Root Health in Sugarcane
THE Australian sugar industry generally employs a sugarcane monoculture system. This has led to a growth limitation associated with sub-optimal soil biological, chemical and physical characteristics; the condition has been called yield decline. Research over a number of years has shown soil biological factors make a very significant contribution to this condition and poor root health is a key f...

A new spot test has been developed for the detection of dithiocarbamate fungicides such as mancozeb, propineb and zineb at nkg level in soil and water. The colour formation is based on the decomposition of dithiocarbamate to carbon disulphide which reacts with plumbite i ' alkaline medium to form a brown complex that finally converts to black lead sulphide. The coloured product exists as a brig...

Dithiocarbamate fungicides such as maneb and mancozeb are widely used nonsystemic protectant fungicides to control various plant fungal diseases. Dithiocarbamate fungicides should be frequently applied to achieve optimal efficacy of disease control and avoid either decline in effectiveness or wash-off from leaf surface. Dithiocarbamates are of low resistance risk but have the potential to cause...

Major loss in crop yield and quality are due to biotic stresses known to be a major threat to agriculture. During the past few decades, pesticides have been used frenziedly though, it is not a good measure of sustainable practice. Microalgae easily become the first, in the list of nontarget organisms that are affected by pesticides. The present study provides the first information about the eff...

The use of fungicides is the continuous exercise particularly in orchard crops where fungal diseases, such as white root rot, have the potential to destroy horticultural crops rendering them unsaleable. In view of above problem, the present study examines the effect of different concentrations of mancozeb (0-2000 ppm) at different incubation periods for their harmful side effects on various mic...
